Full Biography
Francesco Piemontesi was born in 1983 in Locarno, Switzerland. He began playing the piano aged four, and in 2003 completed his studies with Prof. Nora Doallo, gaining the Diploma from the Musikhochschule, Lugano. He is currently studying with Prof. Arie Vardi at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater, Hanover.
Piemontesi is a prize-winner of numerous national and international contests, including the Göttingen Chopin-Competition and the Seiler Piano Competition in Kitzingen. He was also selected to represent Switzerland at the ‘Concours de l’Eurovision’ in Vienna and was finalist at the 21st Clara-Haskil-Competition in 2005. In June 2007 he won the 3rd Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels.
In addition to his studies, Francesco Piemontesi has taken part in masterclasses with Alexis Weissenberg, Homero Francesch and Bernd Glemser and receives important musical guidance from Cécile Ousset.
Since he gave his first recital in 1994, he has performed widely throughout Europe, in Japan, Korea and in the USA. He has given concerts at festivals including the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele, the Martha Argerich Festival in Lugano, the Chopin Festival in Duszniki-Zdroy, the Septembre Musical de Montreux, the Orpheum Musiktage Zürich, the "Next Generation" in Dortmund, the Chamber Music Weeks at Schloss Elmau and in major concert halls, including the Philharmonie in Berlin, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Tonhalle Zürich, the Munich Philharmonic Hall, the Opéra de la Bastille in Paris and the Beethoven-Saal in Bonn. The 2007 / 2008 season sees Francesco performing recitals in major European cities. In November 2008 he will give his New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall.
Francesco Piemontesi has performed with the Saarbrücken Radio-Symphony Orchestra, the Belgian National Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège, the London Mozart Players, the Zurich and Lausanne Chamber Orchestras, the Orchestra of Swiss-Italian Radio and the European Strings working with conductors including Lawrence Foster, Gilbert Varga, Howard Griffiths, Christian Arming and Matthias Aeschbacher.
His work in the field of chamber music includes performances with Yuri Bashmet, Heinrich Schiff, Maria Kliegel, Anne Queffélec, the Sine Nomine Quartett and with members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
Francesco Piemontesi has made numerous radio and television recordings were broadcasted by all major European Broadcasting Comapnies, as well as by MBC-Television in Korea and, in addition, a CD was released featuring his performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto, K. 413 with the Ministrings Lucerne.
He was accepted for support by the ‘Orpheum’ Trust for the Promotion of Young Soloists and was awarded a scholarship by the Migros Foundation and by the "Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben".
Over the last two seasons Francesco was Artistic Director of the Chamber Music Festival of Bellinzona.
